Preparing PDF files for Bert-Co's Prinergy Workflow

You can avoid many common file preparation mistakes by following the basic guidelines outline here for file submission.

File Format

Preferred format is PDF/Adobe Acrobat 4.05 or later, set for compatibility with PDF version 1.3 or 1.4.

Today PDF is a preferred format for one-two-, and four-color jobs. If you have supporting images saved as DCS 2.0, please contact our Digital Department (323-669-5874) or email us @ files@bertco.com.

File Preparation

• Documents should be set-up in single page format. Spreads and facing pages can be accessed and individually printed in their layout program.
• Be consistent in the file-naming scheme throughout your project (Ex: Brochure_FC, Brochure_001,ect…).
• Duotones must be created in Photoshop 5.02 or higher.
• When postscripting, paper must be set 1” larger than actual page size.
• Proper resolution for images should be 300 dpi and scanned line art should be 1200 dpi.
• When PDF files should contain all high-res art and have all fonts embedded.

Page Bleeds and Margins
A bleed image must extend 1/8" past the true dimension of the page to ensure that there is enough image to be trimmed off without white space appearing at the edge of the page. If an illustration or type does not bleed; there must be a minimum of 1/4” safety margin on all side.

Back Trim Margins
Always customize your document's size to the book's final trim size. Do not simply “float” your page within layout program's 8 1/2” x 11” default page. The required margin for a book varies according to the selected binding style. Basic margin are:

Saddle-stitched: 1/8” to 3/8”
Classic-binding and perf-notch: 3/32”
Adhesive-binding: 1/16”
Perfect-binding:  1/4”

Color

• For a rich black specify 40C/30M/30Y/100K (Web) and 40C/40M/0Y/100K (sheet fed).
·
Always use identical color names within a document. If an EPS file is created in Adobe Illustrator and imported into QuarkXPress, you must use exact same color name in the Xpress document.
·
Spot colors are to be identified as the correct PMS number (Pantone Library) and not a custom color such as “Dark Blue.”
·
PMS will be converted to process unless otherwise specified.

Creating PDF Files

Here is a brief outline on how to make PD files that are compatible with the Prinergy system used at Bert-co.

After downloaded and unstuffed, put these files in the correct place:
CreoDistillerAssistant
goes in AdobeAcrobat/Distiller/Startup and PrinergyRefinerPPD goes in your hard drive/system folder/extensions/printer descriptions.

Verify that either Adobe Postscript or Laserwriter print driver are installed on computer.

After ensuring that all used fonts and graphics are present in the application file, crate a print style.

Make postscript files from the application files.

Launch Acrobat Distiller, and enter correct settings. Make sure the correct trim size is also entered.

Create PDF files (Drag postscript files over top half of Distiller. They should automatically start converting.

• Or with Distiller open, open postscript file(s), save as pdf's.

Trapping

Bert-Co's adoption of the Creo Prinergy System has made trapping an automated part of the output process. Therefore, we request that customers apply NO trapping to their submitted files.

Hard Proofs
When submitting jobs on CD/DVD, page proofs must accompany and identify all pages.

PDF Correction Policy
PDF is very stable file format that enables the customer to “lock down” the contents of pages, but consequently does not allow much flexibility for editing. Therefore, we will not edit PDF files and requires that all content changes to PDF to be made by the publisher and revised files be submitted.
Revision or correction files should be clearly identified to distinguish them from the original files.
